FLY IN A JAR

2023/09/22

Overall Impression

VaporLoQ (a project of Canadian artist David Turner) delivers radiant, often jubilant piano-based instrumental indie rock with their release of "Fly in a Jar." This mid tempo composition blends a brilliant pop structure and sensibility with vibrant rock spirit as bombastic drums meet bright, buoyant piano lines to create a compelling and uplifting end result.

 Framed by warped horror foley effects that serve to contextualize the piece, this nearly seven minute track is sure to provide audiences with a satisfying, thorough listening experience.

Indie pop and rock fans should definitely keep an ear out for "Fly in a Jar", available on VaporLoQ's third full length album titled Funeral Suite.

Strongest Point(s)

Solid production and mix. Fantastic energy and vibe, from top to bottom. Outstanding song structure with strong, resonant chord progressions. Excellent dynamic build over the course of the track. Drums sound amazing, tremendous groove with some nice variety to it that will grab listeners attention. Piano is incredibly engaging, with some great pop/rock licks thrown in. Terrific interplay between the piano and drums. Nice wind down at the end. The horror foley framing device is a bit odd, but it certainly adds character.

Overall this is a wonderful composition and a lively, spirited performance that should have very little problem attracting an audience. Great work here, all around.

HONEYCREEPERS

2023/09/18

Overall Impression:

Melodically tempting and harmonically vibrant, VaporLoQ's compelling instrumental "Honeycreepers" is what you get when you blend the synth-fueled sonic aesthetic of 80s electronica with the sweeping majesty of classical music and accessible sound of contemporary pop, resulting in a piece of music that ebbs and flows between its various tonal shades with a definite sense of purpose. Melodies intertwine beautifully and textures encapsulate while the music takes listeners through a whirlwind of emotions, and just every piece of music should be, "Honeycreepers" proves itself to be both memorable and of great creative substance.

Strongest Point(s):

As the first notes resound, the keys take center stage, their ivory keys a canvas for the composer's artistic vision. The opening is reminiscent of a classical overture, with a sense of grandeur and anticipation that immediately captures the listener's attention. Yet, there's an undercurrent of something more contemporary, a subtle hint that this journey will transcend classical norms. The heart of this composition lies in its incorporation of pop sensibilities. Amidst the classical structure, melodies emerge that are catchy and instantly relatable. These pop motifs dance playfully through the piece, infusing it with an infectious, foot-tapping energy. The synth textures that underpin the track are particularly absorbing and allow the song to adopt a rather psychedelic electronica-inspired character, especially during the opening in which hints of Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre subtly creep in. Throughout the composition, surprises abound. The tempo might shift abruptly, and the harmonies take unexpected detours, keeping the listener engaged and intrigued. These twists and turns are reminiscent of many a classical piece's unpredictability, creating a delightful sense of suspense and curiosity that keeps you firmly gripped to the music as it gracefully dances.

Target Audience Appeal:

"Honeycreepers" is an interesting blend of classical and pop-rock piano styles and I'm sure lovers of these styles will find it to be a welcoming listening experience.

THIS MORTAL COIL

2023/02/12

Overall Impression:

With its beautiful free-flowing melodies and heartening characteristics, VaporLoQ's contemporary classical and somewhat balladesque "This Mortal Coil" is both a wonderfully soothing and tender piece of instrumental songwriting that combines blissful melodic expressiveness with a powerful feeling of jubilation, helping to provide listeners with an experience that they'll not only find incredibly easy to invest in but one they can connect with on a spiritual level. From the hope-instilling piano progressions to the delightfully supple strings and their undeniably graceful manner, "This Mortal Coil" is a much-needed and welcome foray into the always captivating world of contemporary classical music and I'm sure many will find it to be a deeply relaxing composition.

Strongest Point(s):

The piano and strings have always been a strong combination and the way in which they both complement one another always proves to be alluring, and "This Mortal Coil" treats these two integral elements with great care, allowing them to gel in a way that feels both organic and delicate. The piano's strong harmonic pull provides great support for the strings and allows them to gracefully craft their fluid-like melodic layers over the top with a graciousness that always feels compelling. This intricate relationship is of course made even more effective by the strong performances that bring it to life and it's clear to hear that a great amount of care and attention to detail has gone into making sure the interplay between both the piano and string elements is always engaging and full of poise.

Target Audience Appeal:

"This Mortal Coil" is an engaging contemporary classical piece and I can certainly see fans of this particular style strongly connecting with it. I found this to be a thoroughly soothing listening experience and certainly enjoyed my time with it. Great stuff!

RED DAWN

2023/09/21

Overall Impression

Being no stranger to the music of VaporLoQ and their unique brand of genre-pushing prog/post-rock instrumental writing, I knew going into "Red Dawn" that I was in for another melodically charged and sonically exuberant track that would overload my senses and take me to a faraway place of intense creative exploration...and I was right. There's a definite sense of weight to a VaporLoQ track that simply cannot be denied and their writing always displays a great deal of both depth and substance, and between the engaging level of grandeur that their writing processes and the energy-fueled performances driving the music, you can't help but feel hooked from the get-go.

Strongest Point(s)

The composition's intensity is palpable. It conjures images of epic journeys, uncharted territories, and the pursuit of unattainable horizons. The frantic pace of the piano is married with some truly captivating melodic themes that not only help create a cohesive quality to the writing but allow for a rather contemplative tone to befall the music, heightening its effectiveness tenfold whilst providing listeners with solid themes to grab onto. Tempo plays an integral part within "Red Dawn" and thankfully VaporLoQ is able to ebb and flow between various states of musical intensity with ease. There is a definite sense of rhythmic contour to "Red Dawn" that allows moments of intensity to lend way to more refrained states of calm. This constant push-pull dynamic is what helps drive the shape of the melodies and effectively sets the tone for the track, resulting in an instrumental that feels like it's in a constant state of fluctuation without losing sight of its strong sense of thematic cohesiveness. "Red Dawn" proved to be thoroughly engaging. Solid work!

Target Audience Appeal

This is a highly melodious piece of progressive/post-rock instrumental songwriting and can certainly see it appealing to lovers of the genre.

THE ROSEMARY CHAIN

2022/04/21

Overall Impression:

Crafting a surrealist soundscape from carefully selected electronic sound samples, VaporLoQ transports listeners into the depths of "The Rosemary Chain" with a powerful blend of bright and brilliant melodies against subtly discordant overtones - all propelled by intense and rhythmically engaging percussive properties!

Strongest Point(s):

"The Rosemary Chain" is a journey!  There's a wonderfully transient quality about the track, with each passing bar displaying a slight variation from the last in terms of tone selection, rhythmic nuance, or layering that keep the listener feeling as though the soundscape is perpetually transforming.  This, combined with a subtle rhythmic intensity and somewhat aggressive instrumental attacks, make for an immersive and exciting listening experience all the way through!  Moments like the falling arpeggios at 2:08 are fantastic in color and effect, and the moving harmony beneath those lines conveys a sense of depth and magnitude that make the musical moment feel all the more important.  The section of "The Rosemary Chain" that could be considered a chorus carries a nearly triumphant quality and sees the addition of even more levity through the quiet addition of a brighter, more present melodic layer at around 4:15 to satisfying effect.  All said, the song offers listeners a rich sonic space to lose themselves inside, and features a clear attention to design and detail that should leave a lasting impression!

Target Audience Appeal:

Those who enjoy electronic instrumental music with rich rhythmic complexity and emotionally resonant intensity will find themselves completely drawn into the sonic space that VaporLoQ has crafted in "The Rosemary Chain", and the six-minute song offers plenty of re-playability for those that connect with it!

This really is impressive work!

Each note has built in overtones to mimic real chimes or bells, which creates a pretty dissonant effect in the song's opening and closing moments.  If this is intentional, then great! - it's extremely effective in setting up tension and resolution compared to the brighter, more carefree chorus.

Overall, this is a well-designed experience and shows an aptitude for composition.

ANOTHER SEASONAL BLUES

2023/04/16

Overall Impression:

VaporLoQ wastes no time at all in setting the feel and flow of their original track, "Another Seasonal Blues".  Within moments, a swelling, saturated synth sound sets the scene and draws the listener fully into the space as emotionally poignant and tonally pristine lead lines mingle with full bass frequencies and a lilting backbeat to create an all-encompassing sonic experience.  Rife with subtle developments and more overt transitions, "Another Seasonal Blues" is fully engaging from start to finish and practically demands a second, third, or fourth listen to appreciate the breadth and depth of design on display!

Strongest Point(s):

The warmth and grit of the initial synth is incredible!  It really does grip the listener instantly and promise more to come - which VaporLoQ proceeds to deliver in spades!  The emotional timbre of the tune is as conflicted as the song's title would suggest, moving between a rolling major feel and frantic minor arpeggiations as it develops and the contrast between these feels is magnetic and true-to-life in a way that certainly doesn't need lyrics to receive.  Unorthodox harmonic decisions in the first part of the hook resolve to their expected counterparts in the next iteration and keep the listener locked onto the present moment.  A powerful solo line emerges at 2:38 and does a great deal of work to deliver narrative and emotional depth to the tune, nicely designed and executed.  Finally, with changeups being the name of the game, the final push to the end begins earnestly at 4:12 as the bass line becomes punchy and nearly funk-adjacent for this style - driving home a sense of ire as the song reaches resolution.

Target Audience Appeal:

Brilliant sound design and crisp mixing set an atmosphere that should resound among fans of emotionally dense electronic music, while the actual composition and musical content of "Another Seasonal Blues" suits easy listening as much as it does attentive dissection.  As at home in a study session as it is an RPG session, VaporLoQ's "Another Seasonal Blues" is rich with character and color and offers something for nearly everyone in its compositional DNA!

Reviewer Comments:

No criticism here, just praise!  I tend to lay it on a little thick because of the way it reads to the public, but I mean what I'm saying regardless.  There's a lot of very intentional, very effective artistry at work in this track, and, having heard some of your work some years ago, this was an absolute pleasure to review and definitely keep at it! - Jon W.

NEVER BEFORE NOW

2022/03/19

Overall Impression:

VaporLoQ gives listeners an enjoyable departure with the release of the new rock instrumental Never Before Now. The band in Never Before Now grooves at a moderate pace and carefully avoids stepping on anyone's toes. In general, Never Before Now boasts a breezy sonic atmosphere textured with punchy rhythms akin to rock formations. While this picture may not play in the mind of every listener, the track does a fantastic job of maintaining a signature sound while adding layers of colorful intrigue. The mischievous, chilled, and exciting scenes that play out across the phrases keep listeners on their toes. While the tune does have a strong sense of adventure, listeners can take comfort in the familiar with the return of some primary material. With the release of Never Before Now, VaporLoQ demonstrates a promising level of compositional creativity, attention to detail, and talent for sound painting.

Strongest Point(s):

While the long running time may seem a bit daunting, it is actually to the tune's advantage. There is a never ending stream of material that flows out of Never Before Now, and it transitions very smoothly. This is the sort of tune that you can leave on and float away with without fear of being jostled or shocked.

Nicely done! We get many instrumental submissions like this, and many will use sound libraries for everything. This one did not seem to have the signature signs of a sound library, so it is a very convincing mix/production if you did use a library. If this was performed by live instrumentalists, they did a very fine job, too.

Target Audience Appeal:

Fans of Rock Instrumentals will dig Never Before Now by VaporLoQ.

TRIPSYCHORD

2022/03/19

Overall Impression:

VaporLoQ has released the new Electronica track Tripsychord. Grabbing the listener's attention, Tripsychord starts off strong with an immediate "In your face" attitude. The moderate beat grooves with the style, attack, and sound of an old school Hip Hop drummer. As the melodies begin blossoming upward, time seems to stretch over the tune's foundation. The spaciousness of these melodies adds significant body to the overall sound. While the attitude of the tune is not one to be messed with, Tripsychord avoids overwhelming the listener and instead passes through textures and moods in a controlled manner. These are engaging moments of sonic personality best described as mysterious, witty, and a little trippy. Overall, Tripsychord by VaporLoQ is a killer new Electronica track that finds a balance between the raw and the controlled.

Strongest Point(s):

Some Electronica tunes drench the listener in waves of sound and overwhelming pulses. Tripsychord seems to take a more thoughtful approach. There is an aggressiveness to the beat, but at no point does it tear anything down or spin out of control. The melodic and harmonic ideas all work well off of each other and have something unique to offer. All of these things combine for a very cool track.
Nicely done.

Target Audience Appeal:

Fans of Electronica and EDM will dig Tripsychord by VaporLoQ

LITTLE WIPES

2023/03/23

Overall Impression:

"Little Wipes" fades into a scene already in motion, offering an optimistic, cascading synth motif with rich tone and emotionally weighted harmonization.  As the track progresses, VaporLoQ's creative efforts make use of supportive and playfully erratic percussion beneath titanic arpeggiated melodies and skillfully covers the gamut of emotional intensities - drifting from an airy optimism into more complex feelings like resolve and longing.  The fades as swiftly as it began, giving the impression that the listener has just caught a glimpse of something without beginning or end - always changing, always moving, always expressing.

Strongest Point(s):

Containing a narrative in patterns that are reminiscent of Classical composition, the amount of emotional content conveyed by arpeggios alone is impressive!  The synthesized tones feel full and commanding in the soundscape, the lead tones rich and warm and the bass frequencies giving a great deal of weight and definition to the melody.  The harmonic progression of the piece takes the listener on an engaging ride and resonates deeply with certain emotional realities, indicating a deeply intentional shape to the composition. Further defining that shape, the fade into and out of the soundscape is very effective at conjuring the idea of endlessness.  Excellent sound design overall, with a clean and compelling mix across the board!

Target Audience Appeal:

Performed entirely instrumentally with cleverly selected synth tones, "Little Wipes" bears a sound signature that should resonate with fans of synthesized music new and old while appealing directly to listeners who hold any nostalgia for earlier eras of the instrument.  Arpeggiation and repetition come together to place the track somewhere on the spectrum near Minimalism while the harmonic movement is sure to grab the attentions of those who appreciate more dramatic Classical and Romantic progressions.

This is a great track!
